From a main power source, an appliance can work if a power cord can conduct electricity to it. These power supply cords are very flexible and they have electrical plugs on its two ends. The ends consist of a male plug and a female plug. A rubber jacket or polymer insulates the copper strands that make up the cable assembly which connects the two ends of the power supply cord. Electricity is conducted through the copper strands so that it can power up the appliance or electrical equipment.
Power cord sets are used anywhere the appliance of electrical equipment is used but the power supply cord is fixed on the electrical equipment itself. There are also extension power cords which are used when the equipment is far from the power source. Sound equipment, lighting, shop equipment, and domestic equipment usually use extension cords. NEMA power cords are the standard when it comes to electrical plugs, electrical receptacles configurations, and cord voltage capacities for North America. These American standards are very different from those set for the international market which is called international power cords. If NEMA plugs are to be used in international sockets, then plug adapters should be used.
In a power cord, the male plug is the one that connects to the main power source. The end of the power cord that connects to the appliance or electrical equipment is the female plug. Many places have different voltage standards and electrical receptacle configurations, and this is the reason why power cord manufacturers make power cords depending on the region and country they are making it for. It is not possible to interchange power cords since voltage and receptacles are not the same. There are differences with American and international standards.
There are many factors to consider when you are selecting the type of power cord that you need for specific applications. The specifications set by manufacturers of power cords include the following: current rating, voltage rating, safety, jacket material, wire shape and size, length, and maximum cable temperature. Whatever your application is, then this determines the jacket materials that suits the cords best. Rubber, polychloroprene, thermoformed from PVC, and textile construction are the jackets used for power cords. The power supply cord or the electrical wire needed should be able to bear the amount of voltage that will pas through it; and this determine its proper size.

These types depend upon its gauge size, awg size, heavy, mid or low application, various jackets and insulations It includes international power cords, AC power cords, extension cords, electrical plugs, power supply cords, international cord sets, etc.
